Cape Verde and UK formalize air accord

Cape Verde and the United Kingdom will sign an accord today, January 9, aimed at normalizing relations in the realm of air travel. The initiative is intended to intensify air links between Cape Verde and Great Britain, including the Republic of Ireland.

With regular and permanent flights, authorities and airlines believe that the English and Irish “wave” in Cape Verde could become even stronger.

Cape Verde’s Minister of Infrastructures, Transportation and the Sea, Manuel Inocêncio Sousa, and the UK ambassador accredited in Praia, Peter Newall, will sign an accord at 9:00 am today in Praia formalizing relations between the two states in the domain of air and airport services. In practice, the protocol will confirm the memorandum of understanding that already exists between Praia and London, through which charter flights are already being carried out between the two countries.

In Sousa’s opinion, the accord will “open up Cape Verdean air space” to “regular and charter flights,” and is a natural part of the commercial relations being developed with the UK and Ireland. With the “discovery” of Cape Verde by English and Irish tourist and real-estate agents, the archipelago has seen important investments that are expected to increase over the coming years.
