Government to present study on corruption in October
Friday, 24 August 2007 16:04    PDF Print E-mail

The first study ever elaborated on corruption in Cape Verde will be released by the government at the beginning of the coming political year, in October. Sponsored by the United Nations as a part of its program for justice and the fight against money laundering and organized crime in Cape Verde, the study on corruption was carried out by polling agency Afrosondagem.

The Ministry of Justice and Afrosondagem are keeping the locks on the first study ever elaborated on corruption in Cape Verde for the time being. All that is known so far is that the results will be presented in October as a part of the National Action Plan Against Corruption, organized based on a workshop on corruption held in April last year.

Another study to be released before the end of the year deals with good governance in Cape Verde. The study, commissioned by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, encompasses areas such as political representation, institutional effectiveness and economic management.

Cape Verde is one of the countries included in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa study on good governance, which began last year in 27 countries. The study has now been expanded to a total of 39 African nations.

The elaboration of the study is being accompanied by a committee that includes representatives from the academic world, government and civil society. Among those chosen to sit on the committee are sociologist Cláudio Furtado and psychiatrist Manuel Faustino, who is also president of the Zé Moniz Association for Solidarity and Development.
