The University of Cape Verde will officially ring in the 2009-2010 academic year on Monday, October 19. Academic Week will also take place at the same time to welcome the university’s freshmen.

Between October 19 and 23, the Praia and Mindelo campuses of UniCV will host a series of different activities.

On October 19, the new students will be welcomed in a session to be presided over by the heads of the departments making up the University of Cape Verde. Guided visits to UniCV’s libraries, laboratories and other services, meetings with course coordinators and a cultural soirée will also mark the first day of classes. Also present will be Portuguese Ambassador to Cape Verde Graça Guimarães, who will hand over a number of books donated by Portugal to Cape Verde’s public university.

The central event of the opening of the 2009-2010 academic year will take place this year at the Ribeira de Julião campus on São Vicente at 4:00 pm, October 21. Prime Minister José Maria Neves will preside over the ceremony, which will also be attended by Minister of Education and Higher Learning Vera Duarte and UniCV president António Leão Correia e Silva.

UniCV’s Academic Week will also include the public presentation of its Doctorate Program in Social Sciences – the country’s first and the holding of the first Scientific Initiation Congress. Through this program, 30 undergraduate students from UniCV were able to carry out research projects at Brazilian universities that have partnership programs with UniCV. The Congress will be opened on October 22 by Cape Verdean President Pedro Pires.
