The Brazilian Ministry of Education made an announcement on Tuesday, September 1, of the general information on the students selected for the Milton Santos Access to Higher Education Project, known in Brazil as Promisaes. The project offers financial support to foreign students attending institutes of higher learning Brazil. This year, 35 Cape Verdean students will receive supplementary financial support through the program.

The project is aimed at helping students who make exceptional efforts while studying in Brazil to conclude their studies in order to return to their home countries as qualified, capable professionals. The students selected will receive a stipend equivalent to the Brazilian monthly minimum wage – 465 reais – for 12 months. All told, 180 students from 11 different countries were selected to benefit from the project. Of these, 66 hail from Guinea Bissau, 56 from Cape Verde and eleven from São Tomé and Príncipe. From Latin America, Paraguay appears with nine students, Haiti with five and Bolivia with three.

In order to apply for the financial aid program, students must fulfill a series of requirements including good school performance and attendance.

Among the schools with the largest number of students selected for this year’s edition of the program are the University of Brasília, with 20, the Federal University of Ceará, the Federal University of Paraíba and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, with eleven each, and the Federal Universities of Mato Grosso and Piauí, with ten each. The complete list of names of those approved may be found on the Brazilian Education Ministry’s website.
