A delegation from Bolivias Univalle University is currently in Cape Verde to make contacts with Cape Verdean authorities, learning institutions and society in general in order to publicize its potential and "break the taboo" that exists regarding South American universities. The delegation will meet with students, parents, and any other interested persons Friday, November 9, at the National Library in Praia. One week later, another seminar will be held in Mindelo with the same objective. At both events, videos will be projected containing footage of the Cape Verdean student community in Bolivia. The delegation, which is headed by university vice-president Gozalo Ostria and by educational promotion coordinator Luís Abecia, will introduce Univalle by discussing the courses of study it offers, the system through which it functions, the cooperation programs it has in various different countries and the Cape Verdean students studying there. Univalle hopes to expand its presence in the Cape Verdean educational market, and this mission, the universitys representatives hope, will give Cape Verdeans a better idea about Bolivian and South American universities in general. According to Abecia, Univalle currently has some 10,000 students, 800 of whom are foreigners hailing from the other Mercosur countries, Europe, Nigeria, Angola and Cape Verde. Cape Verde has been represented, since July of 2006, by 85 students. In all of Bolivia, some 100 Cape Verdeans are carrying out their university studies. The university offers some 23 majors in the areas of health, computer sciences and electronics, engineering, architecture, social sciences and administration. The courses, Abecia guarantees, are high quality. "We have more than five thousand professionals in the market in various countries around the world," he affirms. In order to attend the university, prospective students need only present the required documents, as Univalle has no age limits or minimum grade requirements. Students pay an application fee and monthly tuition fees, which vary according to their major. |
