Public Ministry unfreezes TACV’s accounts

All of TACV Cabo Verde Airlines’ accounts, which had been frozen for more than a week on orders from the Public Ministry, have been freed for transactions, according to a press release issued by the airline yesterday.

In the press release, the airline affirms that the Public Ministry’s decision to freeze all of its accounts was a “lapse that resulted in material damages to the company and its image,” in part because the company was only notified of the measure eight days after the measure was taken.

The freezing of TACV’s accounts was ordered by the court due to a lawsuit filed by a pilot who claimed to have been fired without just cause. The court ruled in favor of the dismissed pilot and ordered TACV to reintegrate him, but the airline neither followed the order nor appealed the ruling, which led to the freezing of its accounts.

According to the TACV press release, the representative of the Public Ministry specified the amount of funds in the company’s accounts to be frozen – 2,777,000 escudos – but a total of 100,000,000 escudos in funds ended up being paralyzed.

This fact, according to TACV, forced the company to overdraw its accounts in order to honor its commitments, paying high interest rates for the operations in question.

“TACV, because of its attributes and responsibilities, in addition to its commitments to domestic and international suppliers, is not a retail store for which the freezing of its accounts would not cause losses as significant as those suffered by the company because of the Public Ministry’s decision,” reads the press release.

The airline also questioned why the Public Ministry “was not concerned with notifying TACV before the end of the business day Friday, by which time all of the banks were closed.” The communiqué indicates that the company will demand compensation for the losses incurred as a result of the decision.
