The European Union, through its fund for African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP), will provide 75 million escudos in financing for the installation of two small-scale electricity networks using renewable energy sources in the village of Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, in the municipality of Porto Novo on the island of Santo Antão.

The project is expected to be concluded by the end of this year at a total cost of 163 million escudos. With a total potency of 114 kva, the renewable energy project, the execution of which is being coordinated by Águas de Ponta Preta, will have the capacity to provide round-the-clock electricity for the village’s 1,200 inhabitants.

Meanwhile, the city of Porto Novo may in the near future see one of its neighbourhoods entirely powered by solar energy. The neighbourhood, called Praia de Tope, is at the Western edge of the city, and its residents will soon be able to boast being among the first Cape Verdeans to benefit from a clean-energy production project.

In addition to Ágias de Ponta Preta, the project also includes the Porto Novo municipal chamber and companies Trama tecno Ambiental (Spain), Erhtec (Spain), IDMEC (Portugal) and Trans Energie (France).
