That wonderful Cape Verdean nebulosity

Carmen Souza arrived in Cape Verde with a label as a fusion singer, a cocktail of sounds in which jazz and Cape Verdean music stand out in the midst of a vast palette of influences. Although somewhat reductionist, this stamp placed on her by the specialized press fits her like a glove. It also went down very well with the public that practically filled the National Assembly auditorium – the audience was expectant at first, but ended up giving itself over to the singer after the first “homage” paid to Cesária Évora.

São Vicente émigrés head home for Carnaval

The Samba Tropical Carnaval group and the São Vicente municipal chamber will welcome the first 100 of a total of 300 émigrés from the island living in the United States to participate in this year’s Carnaval celebrations tomorrow at São Pedro International Airport.

Mayra grabs German Critics’ Award with new CD

Cape Verde singer Mayra Andrade’s latest CD, Stória, Stória, has received the German Critics’ Award. Only a few months after its release, the singer’s second CD has also sold enough to give it gold status in Portugal.

Nancy Vieira and Manuel Paulo release “Pássaro Cego”

Cape Verdean singer Nancy Vieira and Portuguese musician Manuel Paulo joined forces to produce the album Pássaro Cego, which was released this week in Portugal. The CD contains eleven tracks and blends jazz, fado and morna in a format that resembles a book.
